Since 2008, the Hand Up Foundation has partnered with selected schools to financially support some of New Zealand’s talented, but financially disadvantaged, young sports people.
The primary aim of Hand Up is to assist young people achieve their aspirations in their chosen sports, by helping to remove some of the financial barriers which may exist.
New Zealand has long been considered as a 'land of opportunity' where our young people have the opportunity to realise their dreams and aspirations.
However, some of our most talented young people are unable to seize this opportunity on their own.
Today within most sports in New Zealand, even at the elite level it has become a user-pay model. For many talented teenagers, a lack of ability to fund their participation in respective sporting codes means risk of not being selected for higher honours and as a result falling out of 'the system'. This in turn can result in these individuals giving up the sport.
The Hand Up Foundation strongly believes this can’t be allowed to happen.
Now that Hand Up has established a sound record of success, having provided 49 of its scholarships, we are looking to increase our impact by expanding our sponsor base. With more funds in, we can help more talented young sports people. From 2017, the Hand Up Foundation would like to significantly increase the number of talented students it supports. In 2016, Hand Up supported 7 students. In 2017, our target is to support 20 students per annum. To do so, we require funding of 30,000. Out longer term goal is to be supporting 100 students per year by 2020.
100% of funds donated to Hand Up go towards the students it supports.
